People used to come to Rotorua to bathe in the hot springs and take hot mud baths. They are supposed to have healing properties. This was the bath house where patients stayed and were treated during their stay.
The building is now a museum and is worth visiting as it is a beautiful old wooden building. If you ever go I recommend the cinema which tells the story of the Mount Tarawera eruption which killed over 100 people in 1886. It's a really cool film starring Temuera Morrison (Jake the Muss, Boba Fett) Just don't read the warning that they post outside the cinema as it will spoil the 'surprise'.
